Today my guest is Australian writer Ivan Rudolph. Welcome to my blog Ivan :)
Hey Natasha! Thank you so much for the opportunity to post an interview! Your support of a fellow author in distant Australia is much appreciated.
It is a pleasure, please let everyone know about your writing journey.
1. What made you want to write a book?
Born in Africa in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) I lived a carefree and adventurous life as a youth.
Trapped inside the house as a frustrated child one wet school vacation, in the years before TV, I idly picked up a cowboy book. Very young and barely able to read yet and guessing at all the long words, images and scenes appeared, like magic, in my imagination. I was hooked and began to devour books!
I later won a competition writing about the rocks I discovered while hitch-hiking in Africa. I discovered I liked writing, which encouraged me to write more – and my interest in rocks and Science resulted in London University studies in Geology and Chemistry. I met, courted and married the love of my life, Brenda, while there.
Later on, with a young family and seeing no secure future for our children in Africa, we emigrated to Australia and love it here – super people, vast open scenery, brilliant climate.
Ironically, it has been a long time now since I read a book voluntarily from cover to cover. You see, I now write non-fiction and there are months of research that go into each chapter, sometimes days into a single page. Nevertheless, remembering my youthful struggles to comprehend the long words and complex sentence structures, I keep my text simple and accessible.
2. Tell us about you and where you live.
Brenda and I have now retired to the beautiful Sunshine Coast of Queensland, Australia – and feel very spoilt. We were previously happy living high up on a picturesque inland plateau, but our kids told us: “Mum and Dad, if you continue living here, we will visit you from time to time – but if you retire to the coast, we will visit you more often!” And they do!
3. What have you written?
My 13 books (see ivanrudolph.com) include a children’s book and a novel, which were both a joy to write, quick and easy, because no travelling nor research was needed! The others, unfortunately, are non-fiction and range from a rescued alcoholic (turned into a movie) and John Flynn, the hero who “invented” and then developed the very first Flying Doctor Service in the world, which became the prototype for those that followed internationally. He overcame impossible odds to do so, and I have recently signed a contract for the book to be turned into another movie. Other historical figures, including heroines of the Australian Outback, have consumed much of my writing.
A strange phenomenon experienced by my secular father, a near death experience or NDE, gave birth after 40 years of interviews and study to my “Living Beyond: Making Sense of Near Death Experiences”. Thankfully, this book has helped many others to come to terms with what happened to them during an NDE, and to now comprehend and deal successfully with the issues and problems that faced them on return to life on earth. My latest book is a follow-on titled “Your Origin and Destiny” and broadens the NDE studies into a “whole existence and why” exploration applicable to every one of us.
4. How do you market your books and do your promotion methods work?
I hate marketing books, and my methods are pretty hopeless! You see, until very recently, I left marketing up to the publisher in Africa or Australia, who would arrange a few interviews and even book reviews and perhaps a newspaper article or two. I was always into my next book and did not take much notice – it was in the publisher’s interest to market the book successfully and I could safely leave most of that side alone. However, times have changed and a lot is now left up to the author, who has far less time to write and hone his craft – and it shows!
5. Where can readers find your book for sale?
My latest book “Your Origin and Destiny” is on Netgalley at http://netgal.ly/4e8yxT and the previous one I mentioned “Living Beyond: Making Sense of Near Death Experiences” is also on Netgalley at http://netgal.ly/Xa6Hx2 .
